Did you know that boxing was one of the oldest known sports? Boxing was first discovered in Egypt 3000 BC. It was introduced to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece by the Greeks in late 7th century BC. Ancient boxing was a sport that involved fighting with your fists. It has evolved a lot and is now hardly the same sport we love today, with people like Floyd Mayweather and Muhammad Ali, Eddie Hearn and Deontay Wilder.
The concept of modern boxing gloves was similar to that used by fighters. They used a thin, soft leather strap for protection. It was then braided around their forearms and fists. The 4th century BC saw the creation of iron brackets and tough leather straps that could be used to protect boxers’ hands.
These deathly fistfights disappeared after the spread of religion and increased society. It wasn’t until England 1681 that scheduled boxing matches were revived. Boxing is back in the forefront of sport, bringing together champions from all over the world, seeking title shots, fame and glory.
Boxing gained popularity as rules were established and guidelines implemented. This made it one of today’s most popular sports with WBC, WBA and WBO. Fans from all over the globe gather to see their favorite boxers on ESPN in action at high-profile venues such as Las Vegas.
But how long do these exhausting boxing rounds last? Good question!
Did you know that 110 rounds was the longest ever recorded fight? Today, boxing’s final bell sounds after the 12th round. However, this was not always the case. A 15-round limit was established in the early 1900s and became the standard for most boxing matches. A brutal fight between Duk Koo and Ray Mancini on November 13, 1982 changed the face of boxing. It resulted in a dramatic altercation that saw the sport’s rules and length be shortened to make it safer for all involved. Kim, a South Korean warrior, collapsed on the ringside after sparring with Ray Mancini was stopped in round 14. This was in a brutal main event match.
Kim had to have emergency brain surgery, but she died four days later. Mancini’s win in the 14th round knockout saw reforms initiated to improve the protection of boxers’ health. The main rule was to reduce the number of heavyweight champion rounds from 15 to 12.

In the early 20th century, professional boxing, also known by prizefighting, began to gain popularity and became a recognized sport. Over time, rules were created and refined to become what we know today as top-ranking fighting. The longest bouts last three minutes and are for twelve rounds. While 12 rounds is the maximum boxers can fight, many fights have 4, 6, 8, 8 or 10 rounds. It all depends on who is promoting the match and whether it’s heavyweight, middleweight or welterweight.
Amateur boxing is a sport that’s not paid. It is practiced at Pan American Games, Olympic Commonwealth Games and other events. Amateur boxing scores are not determined by power or knockouts, but rather the number of clean punches. Each round can last up to three minutes for men and up to three rounds for women. A round for men can take up to two minutes for up to four rounds, while a round for women can last up to three minutes for up to four rounds.
Youth boxing is not limited to teenagers. It can also refer to youth boxing, which includes young people who box in fightcamps and clubs for fun, not to be on the international or national spotlight. The length of youth boxing rounds varies depending on age.
